How soon could you be flying to work, or to the store, or to the library? That mostly depends on whether you have a spare $200k to buy a personal transport vehicle (PTV). Ehang, a Chinese company that has hitherto built drones, has created a quadcopter that can carry a 220 pound person up to 23 miles. Allegedly, it will be available for purchase later this year. They have to straighten out a few legalities with air traffic control and air space first.
The best part about this news is that you won’t need to get a helicopter licence to fly it. You tap on the tablet where you want to go and it takes care of the rest autonomously. It doesn’t require (or accept) any manual control to get you there.
It also comes with a handy reading light…for those days when flying around in your PTV feels old hat.
