I 100% believe that when used intentionally, tech can become the ultimate tool to bring your family closer together. Today, we are breaking down five practical, fun, and genius ways to use the tech already in your home to strengthen your family bonds.
1. Upgrade Family Game Night with Video Games 🎮
If your kids love gaming, don’t fight it—join them! In our house, we have a rule: on days when individual gaming isn’t usually allowed (like Sundays), we make an exception if everyone plays together. It has become some of the most fun we have as a family.
Here are a few of our absolute favorite cooperative and competitive games:
🌟 The Nintendo Switch Favorites
- Mario Party: Think of this as a traditional board game mixed with a video game. You move pieces around a board, trigger fun events, and compete in hilarious mini-games for coins. It is the ultimate group game.
- Mario Kart: A classic cart racing game. Warning: This one can test those family bonds just a little bit if you have a super competitive crew, but as long as everyone keeps it light, it’s a blast!
🥽 Virtual Reality (VR) is Not Just for One Person!
You might think VR headsets (like the Meta Quest) are the definition of isolating, but there are incredible “asymmetrical” games where one person wears the headset and the rest of the family plays along using smartphones or the TV screen!
- Acron: One person is a giant tree in VR trying to protect their acorns, while everyone else plays on their phones as sneaky squirrels trying to steal them.
- Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes: The person in the VR headset is trapped in a room with a ticking bomb. The other family members have the “Bomb Defusal Manual” printed out or on a screen. You have to communicate clearly and fast to diffuse the bomb before time runs out. It’s an amazing problem-solving and teamwork game!
📱 No Console? No Problem! Try Jackbox Games
If you don’t own a Switch or a VR headset, you can still play Jackbox Games. You can buy these party packs on almost any platform—including an Amazon Fire Stick or a Roku!
- How it works: The game displays on your TV, and everyone uses their own smartphone as the controller by entering a code on a website.
- Our Picks: Drawful 2 (turn on Family-Friendly mode!) is like a digital Pictionary where you draw hilarious prompts on your phone and everyone guesses what it is. Another great one is TKO, where you draw and write funny slogans to design custom t-shirts, and the family votes on the best one.
🧱 Minecraft
Think of Minecraft as “online Legos.” You can set up a local server and build an entire world together as a family. From building massive castles to surviving the night, it’s a wonderful collaborative space.
2. Ditch the Text and Use Smart Video Calling 🤳
Text messages are great, but tone and facial expressions can easily get lost in translation. To truly stay connected—whether a parent is traveling for work, or you’re checking in on the kids when they get home from school—video is king.
- FaceTime (Even for Androids!): A little-known fact is that your whole family doesn’t need iPhones to use FaceTime. As long as one person has an iPhone, they can generate a FaceTime link and text it to an Android user, who can jump right into the video call via their web browser!
- Google Meet: If you are an Android family like us, Google Meet is a fantastic cross-platform tool that works flawlessly whether your friends and family are on team Apple or team Android.
- Our Favorite: Marco Polo: If you haven’t tried Marco Polo, it is a game-changer. Unlike FaceTime, it’s not live. You record a video message when something fun is happening, and your family can watch and reply whenever it’s convenient for them. It gives you that face-to-face personal touch without the pressure of a live call.
3. Create Dedicated Family Group Messages 💬
Group chats aren’t just for logistics; they are great for daily micro-bonding. You can set up family groups on Facebook Messenger, Instagram, or even create your own Discord server.
💡 Tech Expert Tip: Discord isn’t just for gamers anymore! You can create a private family server and break it down into channels. You can have a channel for daily Wordle results, a channel for tracking your Duolingo streaks, a channel for planning an upcoming vacation, and a channel just for funny memes.
It’s a super fun way to stay connected with your teens and spouse throughout the workday and school day.
4. Get Collaborative on Family Projects 📊
We usually think of Google Docs or shared calendars as tools for work or school, but they are incredible for family collaboration.
- Vacation Planning: Planning a trip or a family reunion? Create a shared Google Doc or Google Calendar. Everyone can jump in, add things they want to do, build an itinerary, and negotiate on dinner spots.
- Family Goals & Mission Statements: Sit down together and use a shared doc to map out individual goals, family chore charts, or even write a “Family Mission Statement.” Because everyone has access and editing power, the whole family feels like they have a voice and a stake in the plan.
