Thank you to 2nd.MD for providing me with a $200 stipend to test-drive this revolutionary online medical service.
I have to admit I was a little nervous in about the hour leading up to my appointment with my specialist. I’m not sure why, but it was a very different feeling. Before I get into the actual appointment, let me talk about what exactly this website is all about.
I’m the kind of person that just doesn’t go to the doctor. Of course I go when it’s absolutely necessary, and when I’m pregnant (which I’m not, by the way, REALLY not). There are things in my life though that I’ve just dealt with for a long time. It doesn’t bother me to the point that I want to go in and spend money on a Doctor, who may or may not just end up saying, “There’s nothing we can do about that”. Basically, I have stuff wrong with me that isn’t killing me, and that is just merely annoying. Really, who doesn’t? The main reason I signed up for this opportunity though is because my husband WAS going through a medical issue, that we were very concerned about. As is almost ALWAYS the case, it was completely resolved by the time it came to actually making an appointment with 2nd.MD.
So, I decided to concentrate on something that I’ve had going on in my sinuses for a while, and just never either remember to ask a doctor, or never cared that much to actually make an entire appointment about. I signed up for my account and was able to browse through several Doctors in various specialties and find the person I felt best suited the needs I had.
I chose Dr. Steve Levine (www.entallergymd.com). He’s an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat specialist). There were no available appointments, but I submitted a few requested dates and times, and was able to get the appointment for exactly when I wanted. Now, back to the beginning of this post. For whatever reason, I got super nervous right before the appointment. I thought, maybe he’d think my questions were dumb, did I really want to talk about personal medical information with a complete stranger over the internet???
As soon as he came online my fears were eliminated. He was extremely friendly and was able to help me figure out some things I could try to solve my problem. Additionally, he told me that there were some great resources at his website www.entallergymd.com and www.allergydrops-ct.com.
Since there was some time left on the clock, I was going to take full advantage, and also discussed with him a problem my daughter has been having. She’s 6, and she’s been waking up in the middle of the night with bloody noses, and getting them often during the day. We had talked to her pediatrician about it, and he prescribed something to help it out. Dr. Levine gave me something better to try that wouldn’t have my daughter dependent on pills to keep the bloody noses at bay. I’m happy to report that so far so good! Maddie hasn’t been taking her medicine, and we’ve been using an over the counter lotion that seems to keep it under control for now. We love Maddie’s pediatrician, but really when it comes to the nose, sometimes an expert is the way to go.
Overall I think this is a great service. Especially for someone who doesn’t live near many specialists. The service is also great for a second opinion (which is where the name of the site comes from). I could be keeping my daughter on drugs the rest of her life for her bloody noses, with all of their side effects, when a simple lotion completely solved her problem. TOTALLY WORTH IT!
I had some great video of my entire appointment, but after viewing it you can only hear MY side of the conversation. BOOO! So I’m not going to post it. Because although I’m sure you love the sound of my voice, a one sided conversation just isn’t that interesting.
